Former Australian test batsman Mark Waugh has proposed an unexpected fix for Australia’s problems against the best T20 teams.
His suggested solution would be to replace Pat Cummins with Cameron Green and place Green in the opening pair.
His notion comes after Australia’s seven-wicket victory against Sri Lanka last night, which was a much better performance than their disastrous debut against New Zealand but still wasn’t good enough for Waugh.
“It was a win for Australia, but I’d have to say it was a pretty ordinary performance,” Waugh said on RSN Breakfast Club.
“They’ve got to improve 100 yards to beat the good teams.
“I’d bring Cameron Green in and I’d bring him in for Pat Cummins … and I’d let him open the batting.
“The selectors have been very, very conservative for the last six months. It’s time to grow some kahunas I reckon.”
While it’s true that Cummins isn’t in his best T20 form right now, having only one wicket to his credit and bowling at the team’s worst economy in game one (11.50) and second-worst on Tuesday night (9.00), he still holds a prominent position in international cricket, and his exclusion would be shocking to the cricket community if it did.
Because he leads the ODI and test teams and has a track record of taking wickets at all levels, benching him for Green appears impulsive and desperate.
However, it is clear where Waugh is coming from. After losing 2-0 to England at home just a few weeks prior, something needs to alter before the encounter against them in two days.
In addition, Australia will have only one victory out of their previous five T20 internationals if they defeat Sri Lanka, which is the lowest-ranked team they have faced in all five.
So even if Cummins is one of our go-to attack weapons, Waugh may be correct that the selectors may need to take dramatic measures if we want to stand a chance against the greatest teams.
