Powered by centuries from openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, India beat New Zealand by 90 runs on Tuesday to win the third one-day international and sweep the series.
Gill scored 112 runs off 78 balls and Sharma struck 101 off 85 as India piled up 385-9 in 50 overs.
“I have been batting well and just wanted to go that extra mile today,” Sharma said. “The pitch was really good for batting.”

In reply, Devon Conway scored 138 off 100, but it was not enough as New Zealand was bowled out for 295 runs in 41.2 overs at Holkar Cricket Stadium. Shardul Thakur (3-45) and Kuldeep Yadav (3-62) did most of the damage.
The Black Caps lost the three-match series 3-0. India won the first ODI in Hyderabad by 12 runs and the second in Raipur by eight wickets.
India became the top-ranked ODI team with the win. Former No. 1 New Zealand dropped to fourth.
“In the last six games, we have done most parts right, and that is the key in 50-over games,” Sharma said. “We have been consistent.”
Put in to bat, the Indian openers shared an impressive stand of 212 runs in 26.1 overs.
It was the highest first-wicket partnership in ODIs against New Zealand, exceeding 201 runs by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir for India in 2009.
Sharma reached 100 off 83 balls, his second-quickest ODI century. India’s skipper hit nine fours and six sixes for his 30th ODI hundred.
At the other end, Gill scored a third ODI hundred in four innings. He hit 13 fours and five sixes to reach the landmark off 72 balls.
Overall, Gill scored 360 runs in three innings against New Zealand. It was the joint-highest for any batsman in a bilateral three-match ODI series along with Pakistan’s Babar Azam against West Indies in 2016.
Gill was named player of the series.
“It feels nice to perform throughout the series,” Gill said. “My approach didn’t change after the double hundred [208 in the first ODI]. It’s all about getting a start and converting every game if possible.”
Twenty-one-year-old Taiwanese pitcher Lee Chen-hsun on Wednesday said that he hoped to make it to the majors before he turns 26, after signing with the San Francisco Giants earlier this week. Lee signed an US$800,000 contract with the Giants, consisting of a US$650,000 signing bonus and US$150,000 education allowance, as Major League Baseball’s international signing period opened this week. “I hope to get to the majors before I turn 26,” Lee said at a news conference announcing the signing in Taipei on Wednesday. “Because that age is the peak moment of an athlete’s career, if it’s not going well beyond that time,
Australian Open director Craig Tiley yesterday insisted that there was “no need” to alter the scheduling at the tournament, despite stinging criticism after the second-latest match finish at a Grand Slam. Veteran Andy Murray battled through a five-set epic against home hope Thanasi Kokkinakis which ended at 4:05am yesterday morning to reach the third round, calling the early hours conclusion “a bit of a farce.” “I don’t know who it’s beneficial for. A match like that, we come here after the match and that’s what the discussion is,” the 35-year-old Briton said after the 5 hours, 45 minutes spectacle, the longest of
SSC Napoli on Saturday further extended their grip on the Serie A title race by beating local rivals US Salernitana 1919 2-0 to temporarily move 12 points ahead of the chasing pack. Goals from Giovanni di Lorenzo and Victor Osimhen immediately either side of halftime made sure that Napoli would be at least nine points clear at the halfway point of the season after a straight-forward win in soaking Salerno. Luciano Spalletti’s side now have to wait until their closest rivals AC Milan take on UEFA Champions League-chasing SS Lazio in Rome tomorrow to know just how far in front they would
Sebastian Korda says he is “the worst athlete” in his high-achieving sporting family, but with a little help from tennis legend Andre Agassi the rising American is working hard to change the dynamic. The 22-year-old on Friday stunned two-time losing finalist and seventh seed Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open, weeks after pushing Novak Djokovic to the limit in the Adelaide International final. Known as Sebi, his composed performances reflect what has been evident for some time — he is on the rise, and with plenty to live up to in the Korda family. His father, Petr, is a former world No. 2
