2022 is almost in its final week, with the return of Covid, Bollywood’s failing to big sports events, the year was memorable in many ways. There were several big tournaments apart from the annual IPL, the Asia Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the T20 World Cup and the Football World Cup which kept fans on their toes. And chewing their nails.
Here are some of the best sports moments of 2022 which made millions of sports fans emotional, cheerful and what not.
Cricket is religion in India, so let’s deal with it first. There was everything for Team India to achieve and prove this year but the Indian team broke the hearts of fans in big tournaments. First, the Asia Cup loss to Sri Lanka gave a sad trailer and then the humiliating defeat in the T20 World Cup semi-finals was a film no one would want to buy tickets for. The cherry on the cake was the Indian women’s cricket team’s silly loss in women cricket’s debut finals at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Kohli’s Virat form and Surya’s shining moments
Yes, it is true that this year has not been a memorable one for Indian cricket and their fans but Team India’s star batsman Virat Kohli and rising star Suryakumar Yadav impressed with their batting brilliance and consistency.
How can one forget that heart-stopping India-Pakistan match in T20 World Cup 2022 when Virat Kohli snatched the game from Pakistan’s clutches with his powerhouse innings. His two back-to-back sixes against Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf has become immortal in the hearts of Indian fans.
Virat Kohli has been ruling the world of cricket for the last decade, but in a true sense, Indian fans got maximum joy this year from middle order batsman Suryakumar Yadav. Surya impressed everyone with his fearless approach and ability to play shots all around the ground. SKY, who took the entire year by storm, proved that after Dhoni, Virat and Rohit, there is another batsman on whom Indian fans can put their trust on.
Now that cricket’s done, let’s have a look at other big sports.

Messi’s dream comes true, heartbreak for Ronaldo and Neymar
The FIFA World Cup 2022 held in Qatar saw many beautiful moments. What’s football if it isn’t emotional leaving fans all over the world in varying moods. The dream of every star player is to win the World Cup. Argentina legend Lionel Messi got his beautiful moment, but Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream remained unfulfilled this time too as Morocco blanked out his team in the quarterfinals.
The condition of Brazilian star Neymar Jr was similar when his team was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Neymar burst into tears though he hasn’t ever held back the tear glands. Every tear from his eyes screamed out how much winning the World Cup meant to him.

World witnessed Federer, Nadal, crying their heart out
Sport teaches everything as it lets you experience victory, defeat, discipline, patience, hard work and several other facets of life. In 2020, there were some moments when players were unable to hide their emotions behind their steel facade and left their fans emotional too.
Remember the last match of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal when both started crying inconsolably after the match. In September 2022, Federer announced that he will play his last professional match in the Laver Cup. Nadal was his partner in Federer’s last match. Destiny left its mark on the match when it didn’t let these top-ranked stars playing together win.
After the match, Federer cried like a child. Seeing tears in his partner’s eyes, Nadal could not help it and he too became emotional. Whoever saw this moment must have had moist eyes as well.

India had defeated New Zealand in the first game of 3-match ODI series by 12 runs. With this Team India has taken a lead of 1-0 in the ongoing series. It will be interesting to see if black caps can win the second match and equalize to India, and make the third game, the series decider.
The upcoming game will be played at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, Raipur on Saturday and New Zealand would want to win the game and stay alive in the series. However, Men In Blue should not go overboard as the opposition is playing in India after thrashing Pakistan at their home grounds. Hence, it won’t be easy for Team India to defeat the guest.
    Series so far
The first match was played on Wednesday in Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi National Stadium. While the match may have turned out to be a nail biting one in the last 4 overs, Indian opener Shubhman Gill gave every reason to stand and clap for the 23-year-old. The Indian opener played since the first over and made and broke several records till he was dismissed in the last over’s third ball, stood till the last and kept his foot firm, while wickets were falling on the other end.
Gill scored 208 runs in just 149 balls and made and broke several records in the first game. First, Gill became the youngest individual to score a double century in international cricket. He has also become the highest run scorer against New Zealand, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record. He also broke Virat Kohli and and Shikhar Dhawan records of 1000 runs. As they took 24 innings to complete 1,000 runs and Gill achieved the feat in just 19 ODI innings. He also registered his name in the list of Sachin Tendulkar, Virendra Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, who have scored double centuries in ODIs.

A three-match ODI series being played between India and New Zealand seems like the battle between two equals. In the first ODI, India defeated New Zealand by 12 runs but Mitchell Bracewell’s 100 forced Indian fans to chew their nails. Now the second ODI will be played in Raipur on January 21. By winning this match, India would like to take a winning lead in the series. However, amid this, former India coach Ravi Shastri’s advice to Virat Kohli and created buzz.
Ravi Shastri has advised Virat Kohli to skip the third ODI against New Zealand and play the Ranji match. So that Virat Kohli can gain confidence before the Test against Australia. Actually, Virat Kohli has not scored any century in Test cricket since 2019. Kohli’s last century was against Bangladesh in 2019. Former skipper scored a total of 45 runs in the two Test matches played against Bangladesh recently.
During the commentary, Ravi Shastri said that he always felt that one should play more first-class cricket, especially when the player plays a lot in India. “I feel players don’t play enough first-class cricket. There’s a lot of cricket around, you don’t want to take risks. But, sometimes you have to be smart and sacrifice some matches while looking at the bigger picture,” said the former head coach.
Shastri cited the example of Sachin Tendulkar who had decided to play a similar home match before the Australia series 25 years ago said that 25 years ago Sachin Tendulkar went to play in the CCI against the Australian team and scored a double century. Two months later in 1998, he scored over 1000 runs across all formats against Australia. He scored a brilliant double century and Australia knew they would not be able to get this guy out quickly. However, tweeple didn’t seem much impressed with Shastri’s statement but it will be interesting to see if Virat Kohli would agree to his advice.
Don’t go by size, go by runs and wickets, said Sunil Gavaskar.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar criticised the Chetan Sharma-led All India selection committee for ignoring batsman Sarfaraz Khan who is going through a purple patch in the domestic circuit. In the first innings of the ongoing Ranji Trophy game against Delhi, Sarfaraz Khan scored another Ranji Trophy century for Mumbai.
Several current and former cricketers have expressed their dismay at Sarfaraz’s omission from the team despite his excellent form with the bat in the domestic circuit. Now, even Gavaskar has lent his support to the in-form batsman. He taunted the selectors and said that they should choose models if they want slim and trim boys to play for India.
“When he is scoring a century, he is not staying off the field, he is back on the field again. All this tells you that he is fit for cricket. If you are only looking for slim and trim people, then you go to a fashion show and select some models, then give them a bat and ball in their hand and then engage them. You have cricketers of all sizes. Don’t go by size, go by runs and wickets,” Gavaskar told India Today.
Earlier, Sarfaraz had admitted in a conversation that he cried after being denied permission for India’s first two Tests against Australia. “When the team was announced and my name was not in it, I was sad for the whole day. When we came from Guwahati to Delhi, I felt very lonely. I even cried,” said Sarfaraz. He further revealed, “I called my father to Delhi. He spoke to me, I practiced with him and then felt better.”
India has to face Australia in the 4-match Test series, in such a situation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the team for the remaining two matches in due time.
