Cumbria Cricket has been rocked again by the death of a popular member of the cricketing fraternity.
Arthur Lamb, 31, cricket secretary for the Whitehaven club, died at his Distington home over the weekend.
The Whitehaven club, and the wider cricket family in the county, has been left stunned.
It follows the death before Christmas of county stalwarts Iain Denny and Ken Reid.
Arthur, employed at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, had just accepted a new posting to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
For a short time, until standing down before the last election, he had been a councillor on Cumbria County Council for the Conservatives.
He was a member of the Cumbria Cricket League committee and Umpires Federation secretary.
Whitehaven cricket colleague Arthur Brown said: “He was just an all-round good guy who loved his cricket and the local community.”
On Whitehaven’s Facebook page, the club said: “We can scarcely believe we are writing this. Over the weekend the club has received some devastating news.
“Arthur Lamb who is a cornerstone of our club, Cumbrian cricket and his local community passed away in his sleep on Friday night.
“All our thoughts are with Arthur’s parents, his friends in and out of our club and everyone else who Arthur has helped.
“He has had a huge impact on so many people, in so many ways and developed a generation of young people at our club. It’s a huge loss for us, and It’s not really sinking in.
“On Friday evening Arthur was doing what he did best, helping others, and coaching our junior teams with his normal patience, perseverance and fun.”
One Whitehaven member posted: “All the club is shocked. He did so much as a young man for Whitehaven cricket club, for his fellow umpires, the Cumbria Cricket League, County age group teams and the local community via his political beliefs. So sad.”
Messages of condolences have poured in from other clubs within the Cumbria Cricket League and from fellow umpires.
