An image of Jos Buttler jumping over Steve Smith during England's crushing eight wicket victory against eventual world champions Australia during last year's T20 World Cup has been awarded the 2021 Wisden Photograph of the Year.
The photograph of Buttler leaping high over the head of a cowering Smith was taken by Australian David Gray during his match-winning innings of 71 not out off 32 balls in their group stage clash at Dubai on October 30, 2021.
The competition attracted more than 300 entries from around the world with Wisden judges stating Gray's photo "perfectly captured the athleticism, excitement and pace of T20 cricket".
He is the second consecutive Australian to win the award after former Test and ODI captain Steve Waugh in 2020 for his image of children playing cricket among sand dunes near Osian, India.
Gray is also the fifth Australian winner of the Wisden Photograph of the Year competition in the 12 years since it started and follows Scott Barbour (2010), Robert Cianflone (2015), Phil Hillyard (2018) and Waugh.
An image of four players from Wooler Cricket Club in Northumberland searching for a lost ball in a silage field was one of two runners up, alongside a photo of Finn Allen of Birmingham Phoenix Men dropping a catch during the inaugural Hundred competition.
Seven other images from around the globe were shortlisted, including a stunning photograph of Jasprit Bumrah warming up at sunset ahead of a T20 World Cup match, with the 10 winning entries to be displayed at The Oval in London for 12 months and featured in the 2022 edition of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
